For example, In COVID-19 ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome), the organs are deprived of oxygen as the air-sacs of the lungs are filled with fluids. ARDS has been identified as the leading reason for death for ventilator-dependent COVID-19 patients.

What is the latest update on remestemcel-L?
Mesoblast, a global leader in off-the-shelf cell medicines, announced 90-day survival outcomes of the remestemcel-L trial that was conducted on 222 patients suffering from moderate to severe COVID-19 ARDS.
The results indicated that the two doses of remestemcel-L reduce the death rate by 48% in 90 days, and the 60 days results showed a reduction by 46%.
When remestemcel-L was used along with the dexamethasone, then the mortality benefits reported were 77% in the case of the patients under the age of 65.
Mesoblast has signed a collaboration and licence agreement with Novartis for the manufacturing, development and commercialisation of the dose and giving special consideration to the COVID-19 ARDS patients.

On July 30, MSB announced that they met with FDA (United States Food and Drugs Administration) to make a progress in getting regulatory approvals for the product, remestemcel-L. As a next step, Mesoblast should discuss with FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research’s (CBER) review team to sort out certain outstanding chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC) items that will support resubmission of the current Biologic License Application (BLA) with a six-month review period.
